Onboard weighing lets a vehicle be loaded right up to capacity, and no less — while staying under it.
An onboard weighing system is designed to weigh the load carried on the body of the vehicle. It consists of four independent weight sensors — more, depending on the body — with each sensor working as an independent weighing unit.
Without weighing on the vehicle, loading is done by eye and the outcome is one of two: the vehicle leaves underloaded, or overloaded. The first costs money on every trip; the second costs a fine and wear.
With a system on the vehicle the weight is known while loading. The vehicle can be topped up to its maximum capacity and can take routes with lower limits knowing the limit is genuinely respected.
Onboard weighing is by its nature a process measurement — the vehicle sits on springs, on uneven ground, in motion. Invoicing by weight needs verified static weighing, for instance on an axle or drive-through scale; an onboard system is a tool for controlling loading.
